from Stan Staples

Lt. Russell G. Whalen - Pilot.

My dad was Ross Mashon flying with Russell Whalen #39R.  When he died we received a letter from LeRoy Veon telling us of daddy saving his life.  Apparently Veon was in his turret when it was hit and  knocked out his oxygen.  He said that daddy took off his own oxygen mask and put it on Veon until more oxygen could be brought to him.  This was something about daddy that we had never known.  Made his three girls proud.  Sincerely,  Peggy Mashon Farmer
